Translation of the A-Prompt Software

Montreal, January 31st 2002 - During the past year, the Comité d'adaptation de la main-d'oeuvre pour personnes handicapées (CAMO), in collaboration with the Adaptive Technology Resource Centre (ATRC) of the University of Toronto, carried out the translation of the A-Prompt software. Now available in French, this software was developed by the ATRC and the Trace Centre of the University of Wisconsin. A-Prompt was created to assist Web authors in improving the accessibility and usability of HTML documents for users with disabilities. Available for download on the ATRC Web site (http://www.utoronto.ca/atrc/), this free software is easy to use and enables Webmasters to not only evaluate Web sites in terms of accessibility but also proposes simple solutions for most problems.

We hear more and more about technology and content usability but rarely in regard to the needs of individuals with disabilities. The reality is that in Quebec, the issue of accessible information technologies is fairly new and most industry players are unaware of the resources or tools that can assist them. In order to ensure the availability of French tools, the CAMO entrusted the translation of A-Prompt to Mr. Jean-Marie D'Amour, instructor in the field of accessible information technologies.

The CAMO, a sectorial labor organization for persons with disabilities financed by Emploi-Québec, collaborates with various labor market stakeholders (employers, unions, organizations for people with disabilities, ministries, etc.) to implement strategies that encourage and promote education and professional integration of people with disabilities. CAMO's mission has enabled us to see first-hand the growing presence of information technologies in schools and the workplace. The increasing use of information technologies, particularly of the Internet, to accomplish many activities directly or indirectly related to education and work and the exponential development of this sector therefore poses important risks for the population of individuals with disabilities.

It is now possible to download the French version of A-Prompt from the ATRC Web site (www.aprompt.ca/fr/). We hope that this software becomes a valuable tool in Quebec to overcome obstacles in Web design and we welcome any comments and suggestions.
