Colloque 2000: Conclusion
The symposium on NICTs and their impact on the integration of people with disabilities allowed the identification of possible future courses of action to promote the development of technological solutions of benefit to all.
Courses of action:
- Create a permanent expertise and intervention structure in Quebec (local initiatives or activities could eventually be expanded to the national and/or international levels);
- Promote and encourage the sharing of expertise among the various Quebec stakeholders, at the provincial, national and international levels;
- Sensitize and train developers of standard Quebec products on universal accessibility;
- Sensitize and train developers of Quebec Web sites on universal accessibility;
- Encourage and disseminate the development of French information and training tools;
- Sensitize and encourage the Government of Quebec to promote the accessibility of the public information network and on-line services;
- Sensitize and educate employers and educators on NICT obstacles and solutions.
Thus, in a world where information technologies have become standard work and communication tools, and these same tools have a significant impact on the very organization of work, there is a real and imminent risk that working environments, teaching methods, communication methods and on-line consumer activities create additional obstacles to the integration of people with disabilities. Conversely, technologies conceal an enormous potential for socio-professional insertion which is worth encouraging and promoting.
